Weekend Project: create a vertical garden

By Tom Nonmacher

Hello, fellow green thumbs! This weekend, we're going to do something a little different. Have you ever thought about going vertical with your gardening? Yes, you read that right. Vertical gardening is an innovative, flexible and highly productive growing system that uses upright space. This gardening method is especially useful if you have limited room in your garden or yard. It's also a great way to add an interesting visual element to your outdoor space.

So, what exactly is a vertical garden? Well, it's essentially a garden that grows upward using a support system. This support could be a wall, a fence, a trellis, a pillar, or any other vertical structure. You can grow a variety of plants including vegetables, herbs, flowers and small trees. It's a wonderful way to maximize your space and create a unique garden feature at the same time.

To start your vertical garden, you'll need to identify the right location. Choose a spot that gets the appropriate amount of sunlight for the plants you intend to grow. If possible, select a location that's close to a water source for easy irrigation. Also, keep in mind that the structure supporting your garden should be sturdy enough to handle the weight of the plants and the soil.

Next, you'll need to choose the right plants. It's important to select plants that are suitable for vertical growing. Some good options include climbing plants like ivy or clematis, trailing plants like sweet potato vine, or a variety of herbs and small vegetables. Just be sure to consider the light requirements of your chosen plants and position them accordingly on your vertical structure.

The method you choose to create your vertical garden can vary widely depending on your budget, resources, and creativity. Some people use traditional trellises, while others opt for more modern methods like vertical garden planters or pocket gardens. You could even repurpose a pallet or an old ladder to create a unique, rustic look. The possibilities are endless!

Once your garden structure is in place, it's time to add the plants. If you're using a planter or pocket system, you'll need to add soil to each container before planting. If you're using a trellis or similar structure, you can plant directly into the ground and train the plants to climb the structure as they grow. Whichever method you choose, be sure to water thoroughly after planting to encourage strong root development.

Maintenance of your vertical garden is similar to that of a traditional garden. Regular watering is crucial. Because vertical gardens often dry out faster than traditional gardens, you might need to water more frequently. Regular fertilizing is also necessary to ensure your plants have enough nutrients to grow and thrive. Pruning and training your plants will keep your vertical garden looking its best.

Creating a vertical garden is a fun and rewarding project that's perfect for the weekend. Not only will you be able to enjoy the beauty and bounty of your garden, but you'll also be making good use of available space. So, why not give it a try? Get creative, and don't be afraid to experiment. Happy gardening!
